Abstract

Addresses processes of deep sea investigation, combining a braille reading, by a blind performer, of extracts from Amant Marine: De Friedrich Nietzsche by the feminist philosopher Luce Irigaray, with scientific footage shot (using remotely operated underwater cameras) at depths of over three miles below the sea’s surface. In poetically drawing these elements together it probes the limits of the visible; meditating on perception, alteriety and the possibility of inter-subjective forms encounter with the non-human.

And all the seas were ink - 2012
Chromed Polyamide Laser Built Globe (‘Reverse’ relief globe, sea-bed elevated - land inverted, exaggeration factor 300x)
Diameter 28cm

Reworks bathymetric data, inverting height and depth and disrupting the normal cartographic conventions of representing land and sea, to not only prompt consideration of this ‘unseen’ but increasingly endangered space, but raise broader questions of representation, power and the ways in which we make the world understandable to ourselves.
