Recent developments in learning technology have changed the nature of distance learning in many higher education institutions across the globe. One of the most significant developments has been the impact of managed learning environments upon the nature of E-learning. An internal project undertaken within the presenters’ institution, which reviewed student orientation/retention, made a number of recommendations, highlighting the need for a university-wide induction programme for all students. The review specifically recommended provision of a programme for distance learners, which included information about academic expectations, study skills, student support and development of student communities. A project team was subsequently established to develop an induction package for all E-learning students that would cover many of the aforementioned report’s recommendation. This package has now been developed, containing generic materials for use by all students on undergraduate E-learning programmes within the institution. The aim of this workshop will be to explore the nature of a generic institutional online induction programme for E-learners by focusing group discussion on the following aspects of such programmes: • Composition of Development Team • Content • Delivery Model(s) • Quality Assurance Strategy • Evaluation Strategy The workshop will enable delegates to engage in discussion that will aim to share good practice in all aspects of developing generic induction packages for E-Learners. The presenters will also demonstrate the generic institutional online induction programme as well as provide feedback upon a cross-institution evaluation from new students on the online induction programme.
