Abstract

System Walk/Prenzlauer Berg is an ongoing art project. System Walk/System Drawing/Prenzlaur Berg/Berlin was a solo exhibition that focused on the drawing aspect of the work over the course of the first three years, (2011-2013). This work has been derived from the ongoing practice of art walks called ‘System walks’. The ‘System Walks’ derive from Goodfellow’s art practice that embraces and critiques the application of systems and processes in art production.

‘System Walk/Prenzlauer Berg is a walk in the Prenzlauer Berg district of Berlin that has been repeated each year since since 2011. Each time I have captured the walk with a time-lapse camera worn on the chest. Each year the walk starts and finishes in exactly the same geographical location, but there has been is no attempt during each walk to synchronize with the first walk; and this creates interesting slippages of time and space. Due to the passage of time and as the walk is repeated from memory small differences between each walk, such as when a road was crossed, the weather or the configuration of pedestrians has created small but significant visual differences between each set of photographs. This idea of chance, random difference, and a journey repeated has been drawn in part from Krzysztof Kieślowski’s 1981 film ‘Blind Chance’ and Tom Tywker’s 1998 film Lola Rennt.’
