Abstract

The aim of the study was to carry out a critical evaluation of the use of distance learning in work-based programmes. This paper is a report on the findings of a study conducted on under graduate and post graduate work-based learning programmes being delivered in distance education mode. A Case study approach was used, followed by a critical evaluation technique to examine the data gathered. Findings indicate that there are many positive points towards incorporating work-based learning with a distance learning approach but there are also issues which appear to have longevity; such as the 24-hour operational issues and facilitating needs of students outside of working hours. Although the courses studied were very successful, costs to deliver the programme were not always visible. The positives included flexibility of learning in terms of time and venue. Overall the inclusion of work-based learning on distance learning courses proved to be very successful.
