Abstract

Legerdemain was a two-person exhibition initiated by Dye and a CARcentre colleague, Golding. Their aim was to experiment with installation ideas in which illusion and deception dominate the experience of the viewer. This output is the first stage of a curatorial project, ‘As if’, which will explore different modes of reception in relation to recent theories of absence and disembodiment. ‘As if’ will be exhibited at Ashwin Gallery (London) and Waygood Gallery (Newcastle) in 2008, with a catalogue published, funded by Arts Council North East. This will include ‘Devices and Desires,’ an essay on Dye by Jean Fisher recently published in her collected writings ‘Vampire in the Text’, Institute of International Visual Arts (2003). ‘Legerdemain’ and ’As if’ form part of a programme of research which combines the educational and professional aspects of experimental gallery practices. Dye has collaborated with Baker-Alder and other CARcentre researchers to form a curatorial committee for Gallery North, an in-house exhibition space created in 2004, to serve as a laboratory for curatorial collaborations within the School of Arts and Social Sciences. Twenty exhibitions have been organised so far. Guest exhibitors, including the sculptor Hamish Fulton and the film-maker William Raban have been programmed alongside research staff and students from CARcentre. For example: Kolaiti’s photographs have recently been shown with experimental photographic works by doctors from Northumbria Healthcare NHS Trust (see Brettle and Dorsett above). The aim is to ensure that significant cultural ideas enter the teaching and research environment of the School via the non-verbal experience of exhibition-going. The Gallery North Committee is also planning a number of publications to document the progress of this resource and will extend the Gallery to include an ‘Exhibiting Knowledge’ facility, designed to accommodate the examining of practice-led doctoral research submissions.
