Abstract

Newcastle businessman Carlisle is threatening to replace the Dobson/Grainger legacy with a gated community for the rich and privileged called The Citadel. Out to stop him is Charlie, a slightly mad artisan wearing a welder’s mask and appearing with a succession of giant Heath Robinson type devices resembling human innards.

Written by Peter Dillon and adapted for performance in the Festival of the North East, GUTS examines the divide between rich and poor in light of government austerity and personal bereavement. The play was directed by Fiona MacPherson and performed by an ensemble of professional and amateur actors in a ten-day run at the Newcastle Mining Institute.
