Abstract

This exhibition was commissioned by Joanne Bushnell, Director of Aspex Gallery, who had seen Crisp’s large-scale photographic installations at Matt’s Gallery, London (‘Cars and Caravans’ 2001) and Camerawork, London (‘Still Films’ 1999). The installation explored the social, cultural and aesthetic relationship between the conventions of church and gallery, particularly with respect to the act of viewing. The images themselves were produced whilst Crisp held a Wingate Scholarship at the British School at Rome (2002). The project was funded by Arts Council England, South East and the impact of the final gallery work led to Crisp being nominated for Beck’s Futures, ICA, London. Crisp’s installation involved seven large-scale photographs and thirty-two viewing benches. Her approach to installation practice was designed to stimulate the audiences’ simultaneous and equivocal engagement with secular and religious space. This idea represents an important developmental stage in Crisp’s interrogation of ‘modern’ experience and historical ‘truth’. Santa Maria was an opportunity to rehearse the complex interaction of phenomenological experience and photographic representation. During the exhibition, Crisp ran portfolio master-classes to photographers and artists. Crisp was also included in Diari di Lavoro, Galleria Nationale d’Arte Moderna, Rome (Dec 2001–Jan 2002), an exhibition giving insight into the development of contemporary art through the various fellowship and residency programmes at the City’s many National Academies, and then featured in the Estorick Collection of Modern Italian Art, London (2006, with a catalogue entitled ‘Responding to Rome : British Artists in Rome 1995-2005’ (ISBN 0 904152 49 9). This output was the first of Crisp’s two nominations and shortlistings for International Photography Research Network Commissions, supported by Arts Council England to Santiago di Compostella, Spain and Brno, Czech Republic.
