Abstract

The main theme of this book is an exploraton of the ways in which women's life aspirations and expectations develop and change over time. This was prompted by 'sage' expressions of older women that 'things are different for girls today'. What 'things'? And are they really different. Early research in this area has a male centrality that excludes female experience which is portrayed as 'deviant because it is 'Other' than the male norm. The focus of this book is not so much with 'what' aspirations and expectations women have, but with ''how' aspirations and expectations develop over time from a social constructonist perspective. This book will be of interest to academics in the field of gender studies and a wider readership with an interest in contemporary social issues.
