This book chapter is featured in an edited book by internationally recognised authors in the field of international technical textiles specialising in biomimetic materials both from academic sectors and commercial. The book is divided into 2 parts. Part 1 defines biomimetic principles, production methods and material properties; Part 2 reviews biomimetic applications in textiles. This chapter is included in Part 2 acknowledging the importance of biomimetic principles in the design of functional clothing systems. This chapter comprises the first publication focusing on biomimetic principles in the design of clothing systems it therefore provides an overview of clothing industry and production methods the focuses on the functionality of clothing and uses this as a platform to introduce opportunities for biomimetic innovation both in terms of sustainability and smart technology.
